This mom ‘charges’ her 6-year-old rent.

This millennial mom ‘charges’ her 6-year-old rent. Experts say it’s not too young.

Starting them at that age is great,’ one financial adviser says of a viral TikTok video about a mom who makes her young children ‘pay’ for rent, groceries and utilities.

Samantha Bird takes a hands-on approach to teaching her three young children, ages 6, 8 and 9, about household budgeting: She “charges” them for living expenses. Her TikTok video about the arrangement has been viewed more than 5 million times, eliciting a mix of praise, criticism and laments about the lack of personal-finance education for kids.

The goal, Bird says in her video, is to teach the kids how to pay bills “in a safe environment.”
